President’s Message

Jenny Stoner MS, RN, CNOR President

Hello, Fellow Central Ohio AORN Members!

Hello and Happy New Year Fellow Central Ohio AORN Members!

How is everyone doing with their New Years resolutions?  It’s always hard to start a new habit.  Don’t give up, I know you can make your resolutions into a habit!

Our next meeting will take place on February 22, 2025, at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Eye and Ear Institute. Together with the Central Ohio Peri-Anesthesia Nurses Association, we’ll be presenting “The Future of Nursing: Perioperative and Perianesthesia Challenges”.  There will be virtual option available via TEAMS.  Please see the attached flyer for more information and registration.

On March 5, 2025, voting opens for 2025-2026 AORN Governance.  AORN Governance consists of a 12-member Board of Directors, who are chosen and elected by you.  These members are responsible for the vision, financials of AORN, and they have the opportunity to serve on the national committee(s) that shape and influence our profession.  Our very own, Donna Doyle DNP, RN, CNOR, NE-BC is running for Treasurer.  Please take the time to review the candidates in the 2025 January’s AORN Journal or click on the following link Voting Ballot | Meet the Candidates  | AORN.  Please vote for the future of AORN Leadership by 2359 on April 8, 2025.

Ohio AORN Council will be meeting at Der Dutchman (720 State Rte 97, Bellville, Ohio 44813 on March 15 at noon.   For additional information about the Ohio AORN Council, please reach out to Donna Doyle at djd43235@gmail.com

AORN has started a partnership with nursing network which is a third party platform. This will take place of the OR nurse link. This will be a great platform where we will be able to send out our monthly newsletter. We will be sending the normal newsletter via email for a few more months but we will also be sending it out via nursing network.

Don’t forget – our meetings are open to all, and attendees don’t need to be AORN members.  Feel free to invite your colleagues to join us for valuable networking and learning opportunities.  We can’t wait to see you on February 22nd and don’t forget to vote for our Donna Doyle!

Let’s rise together in 2025!

Sincerely,

Jenny

February 2025

Committees of the Ohio 136th General Assembly

Last month I wrote about the leadership in the Ohio House and Senate:

  • Speaker of the House – Rep. Matt Huffman from Lima, Ohio (Matt Huffman was the Senate President last General Assembly.  He was the first outgoing Senator to leave the Senate floor and directly enter the House as the new Speaker.)
  • Senate President - Senator Rob MCColley from Napolean, OH.

The 136th General Assembly (GA) leadership has appointed members of each chamber’s committees.  Nurses need to be familiar with these names as healthcare legislation is assigned to specific committees to learn more about a bill and decide if it should go further in the legislative process.

Senate Committees likely to address healthcare legislation:

Senate Health Committee: This Committee is once again chaired by Republican Sen. Steve Huffman who is a physician from Tipp City.  Sen. Terry Johnson (another physician, R-Scioto County) is the Vice Chair while the ranking minority member (Democrat) is Sen. Beth Liston (another physician) from Dublin, OH. Other members include Senators Susan Manchester (R-Waynesfield), Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson), Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario), and Catherine Ingram (D-Cincinnati).

Senate Medicaid Committee:  Republican Sen. Mark Romanchuk is the appointed chair of this committee.  Sen Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City) serves as the Vice Chair while Sen Beth Liston (D-Dublin) serves as the ranking minority member.  Other members include Senators Catherine Ingram (D-Cincinnati) and Sen. Steve Wilson (R-Maineville) who is the only member not on the Senate Health Committee.

Senate Finance Committee: This committee often hears healthcare legislation due to the financial component of a bill.  Sen. Jerry Cirino (R-Lake County) serves at the Chair with Sen Brian Chavez (R-Marietta) as the Vice Chair.  The ranking minority member is Sen Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo).  Other members include Senators Louis Blessing (R-Cincinnati), Andrew Brenner (R-Delaware), George Lang (R-Westchester), Susan Manchester R-Waynesfield), Sandra O’Brien (R-Ashtabula), Thomas Patton (R-Strongsville ), Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario), and Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro). The Democrats are Senators Hearcel Craig (Columbus) and Catherine Ingram (Cincinnati).

House Committees likely to address healthcare legislation:

House Health Committee:  The Chairman is Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) and the Vice Chair is Rep. Kellie Deeter (R-Norwalk) who is a CRNA.  The ranking minority member is Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) who is an OB/GYN physician.  Other members are Rep. Rachel Baker (D-Cincinnati who is a Nurse Researcher, Rep. Tim Barhorst (R-Ft. Loramie), Karen Brownlee (D-Symmes Twp.), Meredith Craig (R-Wayne Township), Michele Grim (D-Toledo) , Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) who is a family nurse practitioner, Angela King (R-Celina ), Melanie Miller (R-Ashland), Brian Stewart (R-Ashville), and Angela White (R-Kettering).

House Finance Committee:  This committee is the largest committee in the Ohio House. The Chair is Rep. Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) and the Vice Chair is Rep. Mike Dovilla (R-Berea) with the ranking minority member being Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney (D-Westlake).  There are about 28 other members, Republicans and Democrats.

Former Speaker of the House, Rep. Jason Stephens was not appointed as Chair or Vice Chair for any committee.
